This is something that affects my life every day. It has been a long road; some days filled with smiles and others with tears. But we have gotten through it together.
Spiral Out Tattoos and Piercings held an event, Ink for Autism, on April 22 in Springfield, Illinois. For just $20, you could choose from over 30 puzzle piece designs. $15 of the $20 goes directly to Autism Awareness funding. Obviously, as this was near and dear to us, we had to go check it out.
There were hundreds of people in and out of the tiny shop over the course of the day, lining up down the road and around the block. The local radio station came, and there were even street performers, to entertain the masses. But most importantly, the tattoo artists were amazing.
The quality of work is stunning, and the light touch and personable nature of the artists was wonderful. I admit to having a little bit of an issue, as it has been 15 years since I have gotten a tattoo...and I got a little sick. My artist was a true pro, got that waste basket under me quick and put me at ease; told me all about his first tattoo, and how he got sick too. He even let me give him a hug afterwards...because, well, he marked me for life, we are friends now. It made me feel a lot less wussy! All in all, a wonderful event with wonderful people and a wonderful message.
Autism speaks. We need to hear them. Not speak for them. Not judge. Not try to force them into a mold that we have created. Support, love, and understanding is key. Spiral Out knows this, and spent a day in solidarity with us. Thank you, everyone involved in this event.
You touched many hearts, and showed many people that they are heard, they are seen.
They are not alone.
