Riverton, Illinois, right on the Sangamon River, has found itself almost completely cut off from the nearby city of Springfield. Many areas had it worse off than Riverton Illinois, on the banks of the Sangamon River - our hearts are with Kinkaid, Illinois right now. We just happen to live 600 feet from the Sangamon River, and now have it residing in the yard!
The Sangamon River feeds into a creek, that runs through the center of Riverton.
Houses that are near the creek are trying to ward off the water. The village, along with 80 volunteers, stacked thousands of sandbags to help protect the homes.
Homes near the tracks on 3rd Street have a lake in their back yards now.
The water, as of January 1, 2016, has started to recede by a few inches. We will start to clean up our area, and all of the towns affected by this will need to rebuild to some extent, especially Kinkaid, Illinois. Reports say that Missouri got it worse than we did, too. Keep them all in your thoughts and prayers, and if you can assist them in any way, please do!
